LIGHTING ON LOCATION: OCTOBER 13: BALLET ON A WWII SHIP
Ballet is one of the most formal dance styles, and the oldest Western performance form of dance, with over 500 years of history. The grace, stretch, and strength of its movements make it an ideal subject for photography. To emphasize the beauty of Ballet, what better contrast than to photograph the dancers on the SS Lane Victory, an authentic WWII armed cargo ship berthed in San Pedro – an ethereal dancer against decaying machinery and weapons.
Join this unique opportunity to make unforgettable images. Samy’s has obtained special permission from the SS Lane Victory to photograph the ballerinas – so put Sunday, October 13, noon-6 PM on your calendar!
We will provide all of your lighting: Profoto battery-powered strobes, triggers, and softboxes. There will be a group of ballet dancers in costumes, and George will guide you on how to make the best images.
Bring a wide-angle lens (it’s very crowded on the ship), backup batteries and memory cards, clothes you don’t mind getting dirty (anything you touch will stain), and a strong interest in dance and movement.
We will have a Zoom meeting three days before the workshop, to explain the lighting and logistics of the shoot. The day after, we’ll connect for a second Zoom session, to discuss post-processing, and answer all your questions.
A week after the workshop you’ll submit your best images: and we’ll post a class web page. In all our workshops we compensate our dancers by sharing your best photos with them – it’s the condition for your obtaining the permission to post these unique images.

**All our dancers will be young teens – we will have releases from the parents, for display on your social media, website, and portfolio – no stock or third-party licensing is allowed for these images. The usage of these images is governed by California and Federal Laws.
Instructor Bio: George is an ex-East-Coast-based advertising photographer, with over 30 years of experience in providing services to Corporate and Editorial clients. Projects have included providing photography for annual reports, advertising, and marketing materials, and magazine features shot at locations around the world. A life-long advocate for photographers’ rights, he has served on both the national and the LA board of directors of the American Photographic Artists and currently leads the Los Angeles Digital Imaging Group. George is also a photography educator who has taught at UCLA Extension (2007 Instructor of the Year), Samy’s Camera, and one-on-one. Every summer George leads travel photography workshops in Bali, Indonesia. In August 2011 George was recognized as one of the 13 Best Workshop Instructors, nationwide, by PDN Magazine, the Bible of the commercial photography industry.
