Overview:
Many photographers know how to capture a clean exposure in the field but struggle to translate that RAW file into an impactful, gallery-ready fine-art landscape. This focused 4-hour intensive goes far beyond basic slider overviews to teach you a professional, step-by-step editing workflow designed to maximize Adobe Lightroom Classic to its absolute mathematical limits.
Discover how to master localized light shaping, precise color separation, and advanced selection techniques. You will learn how to read your histogram for hidden dynamic range, control high-contrast scenes, and create incredible depth and dimension that guides the viewer’s eye through the frame, all while keeping your images looking clean, polished, and natural.
Topics Covered:
The Fine-Art Setup & Exposure Control
- The Landscape Mindset: Understanding dynamic range limits, reading histograms for hidden data, and pre-visualizing the final result before moving a slider.
- Bulletproof Library Organization: Import strategies and catalog setups optimized for outdoor and travel photographers.
- Mastering Tonal Balance: Advanced utilization of the Basic Panel to salvage highlights and open up deep shadows without creating muddy midtones.
Advanced Masking & Targeted Adjustments
- The Modern Masking Engine: Deep dive into Select Sky, Linear/Radial gradients, and brush mechanics
- Precision Selections: How to intersect and subtract with Color and Luminance ranges to target only the brightest clouds or specific foreground tones.
- Atmospheric Control & Dimension: Crafting depth and light direction using specialized contrast tools (Texture, Clarity, and Dehaze).
Visual Intent & Pushing the Limits
- Executing the Vision: Learning how to read what a RAW file gives you and intentionally manipulating the data to match your creative voice, rather than just clicking sliders.
- Stretching the File: Techniques for pushing data to its mathematical maximum to pull detail out of intense shadows, highlights, and horizons.
- Avoiding the “Over-Edited” Trap: How to identify artifacting, haloing, and digital noise so you know exactly when you have pushed a file too far and need to pull back.
Color Artistry & The Fine-Art Finish
- Signature Color Control: Utilizing Color Mixer, Color Grading and the Calibration panel to build a refined, cohesive, and professional color palette.
- Sharpening & Noise Reduction: Optimizing files for flawless large-format printing and web sharing.
- The Photoshop Threshold: Learning how to evaluate an image to determine exactly when a file has reached Lightroom’s technical limits and requires advanced layer blending.
Prerequisites:
Students should have a basic understanding of Lightroom, the Develop module, masking tools, and importing. This is not a Lightroom 101 course, it is an intermediate class. However, we will review some of the core fundamentals during the class to ensure all students have a solid, unified foundation to build from.
Class Size:
Limited to 10 Students Max
What to bring:
- Laptop with Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop pre-installed, updated, and fully functional. (Note: This course focuses on Lightroom Classic, not the Cloud-based Lightroom app, and we’ll jump into Photoshop for a brief moment for finishing effects). No computers will be provided in the classroom.
- A selection of 5–10 of your own unedited RAW landscape images for the hands-on practical segment.
- Note: The instructor will also provide premium RAW sample files for the live-guided editing portion of the class.
Instructor Bio: Chris Ewen Crosby
Based in Long Beach, California, Chris Ewen Crosby is a full-time professional landscape photographer, speaker, and dedicated educator. Driven by an endless search for perfect light, atmospheric conditions, and the thrill of discovery, Chris specializes in capturing impactful, gallery-grade imagery of the American West.
Chris’s transition into photography followed a successful corporate retail management career. Longing for the unscripted freedom of the wilderness, he bought his first DSLR in 2009 to document his hiking expeditions. What began as a tool for personal documentation quickly evolved into a consuming devotion to the craft as he set out to systematically master manual camera controls, astrophotography, and advanced long-exposure techniques.
Inheriting a profound love for education from his mother, a lifelong teacher, Chris views instructional legacy as the very bedrock of his business. He firmly believes that true experience loses its value unless it is shared, leading him to transition into full-time photography education in 2018. Today, as a fully licensed, commercially permitted field guide and a Datacolor “Friend with Vision” ambassador, Chris leads immersive masterclasses across Southern California and beyond. His goal as an instructor is simple: to dismantle technical intimidation, eliminate the guesswork from post-processing, and help photographers of all levels bridge the gap between what the camera captures and a highly polished, fine-art finish.
