Session 1 — Speedlights Off Camera – 10:30am-1pm
We’ll start by moving the speedlight off the camera, and placing it deliberately to shape the light and control how the subject is rendered. We’ll cover manual and TTL power control, basic light modifiers, and how to freeze motion — all while keeping the results looking natural rather than “flash-lit.” We’ll work with a single Profoto speedlight and a pop-up diffuser or small reflector, photographing an actress in Samy’s Fourth Floor classroom.
Session 2 — Strobe Lighting Fundamentals – 2pm-4:30pm
Move up to working with a full-size Profoto strobe. Using a single light and reflectors, we’ll work through the core variables that define how studio light behaves: light quality (soft vs. hard), direction (front, side, and back), and contrast (managing the relationship between highlights and shadows). We’ll also cover exposure guidelines, working distance and perspective, and how to achieve a convincing natural-light feel from an artificial source. We’ll photograph an actress through several setups, and demonstrate how to direct talent for more engaging, authentic portraits. All questions will be addressed with live demonstrations.
There will be a live online review and editing session on Zoom on Monday October 5th at 7pm.
