This 2-part workshop includes a lecture and a hands-on, in-person shooting workshop at Kenneth Hahn Park.

This course, set against the vibrant backdrop of Downtown Los Angeles, will equip you with essential techniques for captivating compositions, stunning panoramas, and dynamic bracketing. Join Chris Crosby as he shares his foundational methods and expert tips for achieving exceptional exposures and powerful images in any light.
Part 1 – Lecture at Samy’s Camera in Los Angeles, November 6th@, 1:30 pm-3:30 pm
During the lecture you’ll unlock the secrets to captivating urban photography from sunset to dusk, creating incredible moon photos against the iconic Los Angeles skyline. This lecture focuses on fundamental beginning to intermediate techniques: mastering composition, exposure, panoramas, bracketing, and achieving crisp long-lens shots. You’ll also learn essential planning tools to predict and capture the perfect moonrises, vibrant sunsets, and optimal light angles.
Part 2 – In-Person, Hands-on Workshop at Kenneth Hahn Park, November 6th @ 5:00 pm-7:00 pm
Put lecture insights into practice! Chris will be right there, offering personalized instruction and tips to help you master composition, exposure, and other critical techniques that give your photos that professional edge.

Gear Up for the Workshop:

  • Lecture: Bring note-taking supplies; your camera isn’t needed, but feel free to bring it to make adjustments to your settings before our shoot.
  • Hands-on Shoot (Required Gear):
    • Camera: A DSLR or mirrorless camera offering full manual control (Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO).
    • Long Lenses: Chris recommends a focal length between 70-400mm or longer (e.g., 70-200mm, 100-400mm, 200-500mm, or 1.6/2.0 focal extensions).
    • Tripod: A sturdy tripod is essential for sharp long exposures and stability.
    • Remote Shutter: A remote shutter or cable release is highly recommended to eliminate camera shake.
    • Appropriate Clothing: Comfortable walking shoes and a jacket are advisable as temperatures drop after sunset. Please check the weather forecast; Chris will discuss this in the lecture.

Important Reminders:

  • Be prepared for some mild walking to and from the shooting location and parking. Please wear comfortable shoes.

Instructor Bio:

Chris Ewen Crosby is a photographer based in Long Beach, CA. Born and raised in Seal Beach, CA, he developed a love for the ocean and outdoors during his childhood. Chris was very active in sports and outdoor activities that took him from California’s oceans, through the mountains, and to the deserts. It was these formative years that sculpted his love of the beauty of the earth. He also inherited a love for teaching from his mother. It is a desire to teach, love for the outdoors, and a love for photography which shaped where Chris currently resides in his life.
