Great editorial portraits don’t happen by accident. They start with a vision. Sony Artisan of Imagery Zabrina Deng has photographed weddings, portraits and editorials around the world, with work published in Vanity Fair, Elle and Vogue Italia’s PhotoVogue. In this lecture, she opens up her creative process and shows how she takes an editorial portrait from first idea to finished image.
Zabrina will walk through the five pillars of her workflow:
1. Vision: how to develop a creative concept and story before you pick up the camera.
2. Gear: choosing the right camera, lenses and tools for the look you want.
3. Planning: scouting and working with a location, and preparing for a smooth shoot.
4. Composition: using perspective, architecture and framing to turn everyday environments into creative photographic sets.
5. Posing: directing a model with confidence to create natural, dynamic editorial poses.
The session finishes with an introduction to lighting, covering natural light, LED and off-camera flash, which you’ll explore further during the hands-on shoot.

Zabrina Deng:
Zabrina Deng is a California-based photographer who has traveled the world creating wedding, engagement and portrait photography. She is a Sony Artisan of Imagery and a WPPI Master Photographer, with more than 60 international award-winning images to her name. Since 2011, she has earned six first-place wins and two International Image of the Year awards from WPPI. Junebug Weddings named her one of the Top 50 Best Destination Wedding Photographers in the World, and Rangefinder Magazine featured her among its 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography.
Her work has been published in International Master Photographer Vol. 1, Vanity Fair (USA), Town & Country (Thailand), Cosmopolitan Bride (China), Elle (Hong Kong), Stuff Magazine (UK) and Vogue Italia’s PhotoVogue. She also photographed the 20th and 30th anniversary album covers for Grammy Award–winning R&B group All-4-One. Zabrina speaks at major photography conferences across the United States and Asia, helping professional photographers take their craft to the next level.
