Part 1: Lecture, Samy’s Camera, Los Angeles, December 6th, 12 pm-2 pm

 

Dive into fundamental beginning to intermediate seascape techniques. Learn the keys to compelling composition, correct exposure, and capturing the captivating motion of water. Plan for success by understanding weather, tides, and sun angles. Get expert tips on gear and filters to perfect your coastal captures. Bring note-taking materials.

 

Part 2: Hands-On Workshop, LA County Beach, December 6th, 3 pm-5:00 pm

 

Apply your lecture knowledge in the field during a sunset beach session. Chris will provide hands-on guidance, focusing on composition, exposure, and mastering shutter speeds for striking seascape images. Bring your own filters or sample sets provided by Chris.

  • Exposure: Achieve beautiful tonal range in your seascapes.
  • Composition: Create immediately more interesting images.
  • Capturing Water Motion: Understand how shutter speed impacts your photos.
  • Filters: Learn which filters to use and how to use them effectively.
  • Planning:  Discover the essential strategies for being in the right place at the right time.

What to Bring (Hands-on Shoot):

  • Camera: DSLR, mirrorless or even a phone with manual control (A, S, ISO).
  • Wide Angle Lens: Recommended 10-50mm (e.g., 16-35mm on full-frame).
  • Tripod: Sturdy for long exposures.
  • Remote Shutter/Cable Release: For shake-free long exposures.
  • Lens Cloths/Towels: For cleaning and managing splashes (rain cover optional).
  • Filters: Helpful, but not necessary; bring what you have or try samples.
  • Clothing: Shorts/swim trunks and water shoes with heel/toe coverage (expect to get wet from the knee down). Light jacket for wind.

Important Note: The exact hands-on workshop location will be provided during the lecture.

Instructor Bio:

Chris Ewen Crosby is a photographer based in Long Beach, CA. Born and raised in Seal Beach, CA, he developed a love for the ocean and outdoors during his childhood. Chris was very active in sports and outdoor activities that took him from California’s oceans, through the mountains, and to the deserts. It was these formative years that sculpted his love of the beauty of the earth. He also inherited a love for teaching from his mother. It is a desire to teach, love for the outdoors, and a love for photography, which have shaped where Chris currently resides in his life.
