SUMMARY:Black & White with Intent: From Digital Capture to Silver Gelatin Inspired – Pasadena
DESCRIPTION:  \nNatasha Calzatti will teach you how to make black and white images that are expressive and strong\, simulating the great masters. \nYou may know how to use Lightroom Classic or Photoshop features to create black-and-white images\, but many of these conversions aren’t very good. In this workshop\, Natasha will teach you how to make black and white images that are expressive and strong\, simulating the analog silver gelatin print from the great photography masters such as Irving Penn and Edward Weston. \nYou will learn different methods on how to use Lightroom Classic and Adobe Camera Raw Photoshop together in a seamless way to give photographs a rich and deep tonal range. Better yet\, you will learn how to see in black and white before capturing the image. Natasha will show you how to change the brightness values of specific tones and help you selectively add brightness and darkness to direct the viewer’s eye through the image. We will explore how to use presets\, settings\, and plug-ins to help you achieve film and analog looks in your digital black and white. There will also be a discussion about printing\, including proper print settings and which papers to use and when. \nTechnical Level: Intermediate\, basic beginner knowledge of Lightroom Classic or ACR Photoshop software is required. Accessing files on the OS system\, basic tone and contrast adjustments. \nWhat to bring: \n5-10 unprocessed/not adjusted images. It would be best if the images were shot in RAW format. JPEGS\, TIFFS\, or PSDs are okay. \nThis workshop will cover: \n• Using Adobe Camera Raw and or Lightroom Classic AI Masking. \n• Workflow for the master file concept using Photoshop• Setting density and tone balance \n• Burning and dodging \n• Using Smart-sharpening techniques \n• Using color management to ensure consistent results from monitor to final print or web \nCancellation Policy: Refund requests must be made in writing at least 30 days prior to the event. No refunds or credits will be given with less than 30 days’ notice. \n** The classroom is located on the second floor of our store. Access to the classroom is available via stairs. There is no elevator to the second floor.** \nInstructor Bio: \nNatasha Calzatti. Upon receiving her BFA in Photography from Otis Parsons School of Design\, Natasha Calzatti\, a photographer and digital retoucher\, went on to shoot award-winning photography for THE NEW YORK TIMES\, NEWSWEEK\, PEOPLE\, and VIBE\, and has been syndicated internationally. Her work is represented in many private collections and has been shown publicly in Los Angeles and\, more recently\, in Portland\, Oregon’s Black Box Gallery. Simultaneous to her photography career\, Natasha found herself at the cutting edge of imaging as it transitioned from the chemical darkroom to the digital darkroom\, where her abilities became increasingly in demand for magazine clients\, TV Guide\, Marie Claire\, Time Magazine\, The Source\, and Vibe\, as well as advertising clients Midas\, MCI\, and Dreyfus. Ms. Calzatti was invited to The Getty Center to share her behind-the-camera experiences of Cuba as she presented an in-gallery exploration of A Revolutionary Project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now. Today\, Ms. Calzatti divides her time between shooting assignments and lecturing on digital imaging issues both in the U.S. and abroad. SUMMARY:Preparing for Your First (or next!) Big Wildlife Safari Trip- Pasadena
DESCRIPTION:For wildlife photographers\, going on a wildlife safari or an African photography tour\, get prepared with instructor Moses Sparks.\n\n\nFor a wildlife photographer\, going on a wildlife safari or African photography tour is an adventure that many of us dream about\, an opportunity to see and photograph exotic animals\, and capture those once-in-a-lifetime images and memories. \nFiguring out what gear you really need\, how to pack and travel with it\, and how to use it effectively in the field can be overwhelming and confusing. \nAfter all\, an African safari is very different from shooting in the humid rainforest of Costa Rica\, or working in the cold of a Yellowstone winter\, or dealing with the steaming jungles of Brazil. \nIn this class\, you will learn from a professional photographer who has traveled all over the world\, shooting wildlife and encountered the challenges we all face. \nMoses will talk about cameras and lenses\, of course\, but also how to get them to your destination safely\, what support gear is essential\, and all the tips and tricks you need to come home with amazing pictures. \nMoses will also touch on bags and packs\, tripods/monopods\, straps\, rain gear\, clothing\, insect protection\, and so much more. These are the little things that become major factors on location. \n** The classroom is located on the second floor of our store. Access to the classroom is available via stairs. There is no elevator to the second floor.** \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Moses Sparks: \nMoses has been a professional photographer based in Los Angeles for more than 30 years\, and my career arc is a little crazy. \nMoses started out as a fashion and portrait photographer\, with photo credits in Harper’s Bazaar\, Marie Claire\, Entertainment Weekly\, and Rolling Stone. He then expanded into the corporate market\, shooting annual reports\, advertising\, and executive portraits for a host of Fortune 500 companies. \nMoses then moved into photographing at major TV and motion picture studios – including NBC Universal\, Disney\, Warner Brothers\, Showtime\, Paramount\, and most recently\, Amazon Prime and Netflix. Those images have appeared regularly in trade publications like Variety\, The Hollywood Reporter\, and TV Guide. \nDuring the Covid shutdown\, Moses pivoted to doing nature and wildlife photography and began shooting projects for the National Park Service\, BBC\, and conservation groups around the world. He has been a featured photographer for Sony’s “Artisans of Imagery” podcast. \nMoses has been all around the world\, photographing some of the strangest and rarest animals to be found anywhere. Moses is currently preparing for several gallery shows. He has published his first book of wildlife photography and is currently working on a second. \n\n\n\nBy registering for this workshop\, you are agreeing to our Terms and Conditions. Not long after\, he entered the digital age\, shooting both photos and video on the latest digital cameras. As an actor and fan of visual media\, he developed his artistic sensibility by watching every film he could\, by learning lighting and shot composition on film sets\, and by applying his lessons to shooting in the field. SUMMARY:Street Photography Intensive with Todd Felderstein - Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:In this Street Photography Intensive\, we will explore our everyday surroundings with a curious\, artistic eye and an eager camera.\n\n\nAs a photographer\, how do we see? What makes people\, places\, and things so fascinating while simultaneously so intimidating? How do we identify and then approach scenes and subjects without disturbing the story? \nWelcome to our Street Photography Intensive\, where\, after a brief technical review of photography and camera basics\, participating photographers will embark on the local streets with cameras in hand. Each outing will offer the opportunity for an in-depth classroom review by our peers while diving into the careers of those photography giants in this field. Our overall goal is to strengthen our photographic skills and refine our ability to “see” while furthering our prowess on the street. \nWe will wrap the day with a much stronger understanding of street photography and how best to capture the world around us in a still image that speaks volumes. \nLECTURE TOPICS WILL INCLUDE: \n\nHow do we anticipate an unfolding image without disturbing the narrative?\nHow to respect light and shadows?\nHow do we make peace with our surroundings?\nThe impact of color vs. black and white.\nWhat strengthens an image?\nHow to perfect your timing on the street to ultimately tell the story that you intended?\nHow to develop a “style.”\nAs adults\, what do we take for granted versus the magic that is often overlooked?\nReminders: Look up! Have patience! Bend your knees!\n\nWORKSHOP SCHEDULE: \n10:30 am-11:30 am Beginning Camera/Photography Refresher at Samy’s Camera Los Angeles \n12:00 pm-1:30 pm Street Photography Lecture Samy’s Camera Los Angeles \n1:30 pm-3:00 pm Street Photography Hands-On Shoot \n3:00 pm-4:00 pm Street Photography Review & Critique at Samy’s Camera Los Angeles \n**Attendees may shoot with either film or digital cameras. However\, for those shooting film cameras\, we ask that you also bring a digital camera and shoot some digital photos so that you may participate in the review portion of the workshop. \n**The optional 10:30 am Beginning Camera/Photography Refresher Session is great for those who want to brush up on their basic photography knowledge. \nInstructor Bio: \nWhether in photography or moving pictures\, photographer and filmmaker Todd Felderstein found his niche early on capturing people through visual storytelling. Todd is published internationally having shot for many top PR and commercial firms. He photographed the award-winning No Smoking campaign for the City of Los Angeles\, covers for Black Belt Magazine and recent sessions with Cheryl Hines and presidential candidate Robert Kennedy\, Jr. Todd was a fixture in the music scene working with the late Burt Bacharach\, Quincy Jones\, Scarlet Rivera\, Tommy Eyre\, Booker T. and a good handful of Grammy and Oscar winners. As a director\, Todd’s scripted and documentary productions have screened in festivals around the world from Cannes to Los Angeles. Today many of these productions can be found on your favorite streaming services. Todd is an artist-in-residence as a directing member of the Actors Studio and is behind the upcoming stage adaptation of Dan Millman’s\, Way of the Peaceful Warrior. \nForever a mentor\, Todd created and supported curricula for a variety of nonprofits empowering hundreds of teen visual artists in challenged communities. Organizations include The Story Project\, the Boys and Girls Clubs\, the San Pedro Int. Film Festival\, LACP\, UCLA\, HUD\, and others. Todd’s “Street” and “Portrait” workshops for both adults and teens have been an annual staple at the Los Angeles Center of Photography since 2016.
