Lighting on Location: Street Fashion at Mission Road with George Simian

Join us at an outdoor, strikingly-funky Mexican auto-repair shop on Mission Road in East Los Angeles where we will work with charismatic actors and strobe lighting.

This will be a unique hands-on-shooting workshop, to raise your location-lighting and model-directing skills to the next level! Today’s editorial and commercial fashion photography is shot outside the studio, in visually-interesting locations, with charismatic actors performing a story – and with strobe lighting making them pop out of the environment!

We’ll set up 4 different locations to give you different opportunities to create dramatic new images.  You will work with several young dancers as your subjects, using battery-powered Profoto strobe-lighting equipment and large soft boxes, to create beautiful light and focus attention on the subject. You will learn to control the quality of the light, balance it with the ambient backlight, and make images with fashion style. We will also address how to direct the dancer, and how to collaborate with her in creating a story.

Simply bring your camera, backup battery and memory cards, and we’ll provide the rest (education, dancers, strobes, and water)!

Our location workshops are challenging – but we take the time to train you before the start of your shoot, as well as limit participation to only 12 students, to ensure individual support! A week after the event, you’ll send us your best images to share with the dancers, as well as post to a class web page – and you’ll receive individual email feedback.

About the Instructor George Simian:

George is a Los Angeles based commercial photographer with 25 years experience of providing services to Corporate and Editorial clients. Projects have included providing photography for annual reports, advertising and marketing materials, and magazine features, shot on locations around the US and the world.

George is also a photography educator who teaches at UCLA Extension (2007 Instructor of the Year), Samy’s Camera, and one-on-one. He leads travel photography workshops during summer, currently focusing on Bali, Indonesia. In August 2011 George was recognized as one of the 13 Best Workshop Instructors, as selected by PDN Magazine, the Bible of the commercial photography industry.

George Simian was voted one of the top 13 photo instructors in the United States in 2011. Photo District News magazine recently announced the results of their readers poll for best workshop instructors and George Simian made the list.
