- Lecture on Zoom: Thursday May 20th at 7PM
- Hands-on Shooting Workshop: Sunday May 23rd from 12pm-6pm
- Review & Critique Session on Zoom: Monday May 24th at 7PM
- A week after the workshop we will post a group web page, with everyone’s best work, as well as reward the dancers with your images!
In this hands-on shooting workshop you will create excitement and focus the attention on the dancer, with light! To highlight the dancer, you’ll light her with a large strobe, while using ambient light for the background. To control the quality of the light, you will use soft boxes and reflectors, placing the highlights and modifying the amount of detail in the shadows, to achieve a dramatic image. You will learn to balance the strobe’s intensity with the brightness of the ambient light. After light, color will be the other tool you’ll use intentionally – you’ll use color gels and a custom white balance, to differentiate and separate her from the background.
More challenging will be capturing the peak moment, and composing it into an exciting graphic arrangement. Through observation and practice you’ll perfect your capture of the decisive moment in the dancer’s movement, when the gesture and body shape are at their peak – and freeze it with strobe lighting!
Working in small groups, you’ll move to four different locations in the warehouse, and meet new dancers in each spot. Just bring your camera, a normal or short telephoto lens, extra cards and batteries – we’ll provide everything else (the instruction, the dancers, the lights, the reflectors, and the triggers!)
